From November 11 to 22, 2024, Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, will host COP 29, a major global conference on climate change. This meeting is particularly important for Africa, as our continent is significantly impacted by climate change, even though it is not the main contributor to it.
Rising temperatures, droughts, floods, and storms are becoming increasingly frequent in Africa. This affects agriculture, access to drinking water, and ecosystems. For example, countries like Mali and Niger are experiencing severe droughts, while others, such as Mozambique, are hit by increasingly violent cyclones.
At COP 29, African leaders will discuss solutions to protect our continent. They will seek funding to help African countries adapt to climate change and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. They will also ask for more support to repair the damages already caused by climate change, as Africa needs assistance to build resilient infrastructure, such as irrigation systems and weather-resistant housing.
Africa also has an important role to play in the fight against climate change. For instance, by protecting its forests and developing renewable energy sources, like solar and wind energy. These actions can not only protect the environment but also create new opportunities for young Africans by generating green jobs.
COP 29 is therefore a great opportunity for Africa to address an issue that concerns us all and to work together for a more sustainable future.
