Goliath beetles in danger because of cocoa

Goliath beetles, some of the world’s largest insects, are in great danger! These giant beetles, which can weigh up to 100 grams, live in West Africa. But deforestation threatens their habitat.

Why? Because of cocoa! Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Nigeria produce most of the world’s chocolate. To plant more cocoa trees, forests where beetles live are being cut down. As a result, in Côte d’Ivoire, 80% of Goliathus cacicus and 40% of Goliathus regius have disappeared!

Scientists are calling for forest protection. They also want to raise awareness among local communities to save these incredible beetles. Protecting nature means protecting all living beings!
