A few days ago, 65 sea turtles returned to their ocean home on the beach of Conche des Baleines, at Île de Ré. These turtles had washed up on the Atlantic coast this winter. Rescued by the La Rochelle Aquarium, they were treated before being released back into the sea.

« That’s ten times more than usual! » said the aquarium director. Between October and April, 152 turtles were rescued, mainly juvenile turtles brought in by the winter currents and storms.

Over 200 children attended this unique event, cheering as the turtles returned to the ocean. Two of them were even equipped with GPS trackers to monitor their travels. Originally from Cape Verde and Florida, these turtles will migrate back to their birthplaces to reproduce and feed.

This successful release operation highlighted the importance of protecting and monitoring sea turtles to preserve our biodiversity.
