In Kenya, students at a primary school are benefiting from an innovative water filtration system designed by two engineers. This inspiring initiative is transforming their daily lives!
At a primary school in Kisii County, southwestern Kenya, an extraordinary project has taken root. Dr. Paul Onkundi Nyangaresi, a Kenyan engineer, and Dr. Sara Beck from Canada collaborated to develop a unique water filtration system. This device uses sand and UV lamps powered by solar energy to purify water, making it safe for drinking.
Previously, students often had to leave their classes to fetch water, which was sometimes unsafe. Now, they have access to clean water on-site, improving both their health and learning experience.
This project highlights the importance of involving local communities in such initiatives. Dr. Nyangaresi emphasized that understanding and addressing the specific needs of the community is crucial for success. The team hopes to expand this system to other regions in Kenya and even to underserved areas in Canada.
