LIBRE project in Guinea : putting an end to violence against women and girls

A crucial project has been launched in Conakry to combat violence against women in Guinea. Funded by the European Union, the LIBRE project aims to put an end to impunity for the perpetrators of such violence and strengthen gender equality in the country.

The LIBRE project launched in Conakry, Guinea, is a crucial initiative in the fight against violence against women and girls. Funded by the European Union to the tune of €1.3 million, the project aims to put an end to impunity for the perpetrators of such violence and to strengthen gender equality in the country.

Aminata Millimono, who is in charge of the project, stresses the urgent need for action in the face of the upsurge in rape, early marriage and female genital mutilation in Guinea. The results of a 2017 national survey show some alarming figures: 96% of women have undergone genital mutilation, 63% have been forced into an early marriage, and 85% have been victims of domestic violence. This violence also affects schools, with 77% of cases reported, 49% of which are of a sexual nature.

The LIBRE project targets three specific areas: the capital Conakry and its surroundings, the Mamou area and the Kankan area. Over a 36-month period, women’s rights non-governmental organisations such as Avocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France), the Club des Jeunes Filles Leaders de Guinée (CJFLG) and the Centre de Protection et de Promotion des Droits de l’Homme (CPDH) will work together to implement concrete actions.

The main aim of the project is to help combat gender-based discrimination and related violence. To achieve this, the emphasis will be on combating the impunity of perpetrators of violence by promoting victims’ access to justice. NGOs, the media, political decision-makers, financial partners and national authorities will all be mobilised to ensure the success of this initiative.

Together, we must act to put an end to this violence and guarantee a safe and equal future for all women and girls in Guinea.
