May 10 is a very important day in France and many other countries around the world. It’s the National Day of Memory of the Slave Trade, Slavery, and their Abolitions. But what exactly do we commemorate on this day?
Several centuries ago, millions of people were captured in Africa and then transported by ship to America, the Caribbean, and other regions. They were forced to work in terrible conditions on sugar, cotton, or other plantations. These people were enslaved, deprived of their freedom, and separated from their families.
On May 10, we remember this painful time in history. We honor all those who suffered, but also those who fought to end slavery. It is also a time to remind everyone that it’s important to respect the rights of every human being and to say, « Never again. »
