Opira Bosko Okot, a South Sudanese refugee, has become a spokesperson for the most vulnerable populations. At COP29, he advocates for climate change victims and urges immediate action.
In 2017, Opira Bosko Okot fled South Sudan with his family due to war, walking for days before finding refuge in Uganda. Yet, life in the refugee camp introduced another challenge: climate change. Droughts, infertile lands, and rising tensions highlighted the profound impacts of environmental crises.
Thanks to a scholarship, Opira pursued economics studies and left the camp to amplify the voices of refugees. At COP29 in Baku, he reminds global leaders that climate policies must prioritize the most vulnerable. He fights for timely funding to prevent tragedies like the recent loss of 14 children struck by lightning in a refugee school without protection.
