Tanzania has just announced the end of its Marburg epidemic after 42 days with no new cases…
This marks a significant victory, as the virus, which is highly dangerous, has a mortality rate of up to 88%. This success is the result of tireless work by thousands of healthcare workers and exemplary coordination between Tanzanian authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO).
Since March, medical teams have closely monitored each affected person and trained over 1,000 agents to help stop the virus’s spread. Fortunately, after several weeks, no new cases have been reported.
The Marburg virus is transmitted by bats and can make those exposed very sick. While Tanzania’s victory is a great sign, vigilance remains essential to prevent future outbreaks.
