The Ice Lions of Kenya : an inspiring Hockey team

@Kenya Ice Hockey

In Kenya, a very special hockey team is making dreams come true! The Ice Lions, led by a Quebecois coach named Tim Colby, play on a unique, small square rink. Discover their amazing story as told by Le Journal du Québec.

Tim Colby, originally from Montreal, has been living in Kenya since 2010. He found this group of passionate players who often practice on roller skates due to the lack of ice. « It’s beautiful to see them play! They love hockey, » Tim enthusiastically explains. The players, who share helmets and sticks during games, are surrounded by lions and giraffes near their arena, making each training session even more exciting!

The story of the Ice Lions began thanks to Canadian students who brought their equipment and encouraged Kenyans to try hockey. Over time, the number of players grew, and they even succeeded in joining the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), which is a huge step for them. With this recognition, they can participate in tournaments and receive help to train new coaches.

What is particularly inspiring is seeing children from underprivileged neighborhoods travel by bus to attend practice. For them, hockey is more than just a sport; it’s an opportunity to learn, travel, and build their self-confidence. As Tim says, « It’s not just about being a good player, but about becoming a good teammate. »
