Women: The first victims of war!

Women and girls are suffering more and more in times of war. Let’s discover together what is happening and why it is important to take action!

A recent UN report, presented by António Guterres, alerts us to a very serious problem: the mortality of women in conflict zones is increasing. It has been 24 years since Resolution 1325 was established to protect women and involve them in peace processes, but the situation is deteriorating.

More than 600 million women and girls are affected by armed conflicts, which represents a 50% increase in just ten years! These figures are alarming. In times of war, women are often victims of violence, and their rights are neglected. António Guterres emphasized that the rights of women, which had been achieved with so much effort, are now threatened. Less than 10% of those participating in peace negotiations are women, which is very insufficient. Moreover, while global military spending reaches enormous amounts, such as $2.44 trillion in 2023, only 0.3% of annual aid is allocated to defending women’s rights.

This year, the situation is even more serious: the number of women killed has doubled, and sexual violence related to conflicts has increased by 50%. Girls are not spared, with a 35% rise in serious violations against them. Sima Bahous from UN Women expressed her concern for women living in Afghanistan, Gaza, Sudan, and other war-torn regions. She calls for strong political measures and increased investments to protect women. Otherwise, peace may remain a distant dream.
