World Day of the African Child : celebrate, Remember, and Act!

On June 16, the African coalitions of the Global Action Against Poverty will organize simultaneous actions to celebrate the World Day of the African Child. It’s a very special day to remember and act!

Every year on June 16, we commemorate the massacre of the children of Soweto in 1976 by the apartheid regime in South Africa. It was a very sad moment, but today, we use this date to remind the world of the importance of protecting and helping all the children of Africa.

The coalitions of the Global Action Against Poverty have chosen this day to make it the African White Band Day. They are asking the leaders of African countries to act immediately to eradicate extreme poverty, which causes the death of a child every 3 seconds on average.

From Soweto to the African Continent

In South Africa, children and adults will gather in Soweto to urge African leaders to help orphans and vulnerable children. Loise Bwambale, a member of the Pan-African Parliament, will lead the operations. In Kenya, a massive mobilization with nearly 5,000 children will take place in Thika, in the poor neighborhood of Kiandutu, where many children are orphans. The vice president will be present, but the guest of honor will be a child!

Actions Across the Continent

In Senegal, a major demonstration involving 500 children is planned. An important meeting between the president of Senegal and the children will take place. Celebrities such as Youssou NDour and Baaba Maal have been invited to support this cause. In Tanzania, mobilizations and a press conference will also mark the Day of the African Child.

The Importance of Acting Together

This World Day of the African Child is a wonderful opportunity to remind everyone that every child has the right to a better life. By working together, we can make a difference and create a future where all children are protected and loved.
