Zimbabwe : a project to support people with disabilities

@Ohchr

A United Nations-backed project is helping people with disabilities in Zimbabwe defend their rights and fully participate in society.

In Zimbabwe, people with disabilities, especially women, have long been marginalized. However, a project launched in partnership with the United Nations aims to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities and improve their inclusion in society. For the past six years, the program has focused on raising awareness of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and promoting its local implementation.

Through training and awareness-raising efforts, people with disabilities are better prepared to defend their rights and participate in decision-making processes. The project has also led the Zimbabwean government to propose new legislation to protect people with disabilities from discrimination. The results of this program are promising, with increased participation of people with disabilities in the country’s social and political life.
