Henna, Attiéké, Kente… Africa’s treasures Rrecognized by UNESCO

African traditions shine on the global stage! UNESCO has added several practices and skills from the continent to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a wonderful recognition aimed at preserving these unique treasures.

Africa’s intangible cultural heritage grows richer with new additions by UNESCO. Among them is henna, a festive tradition where hands and feet are adorned with beautiful designs to celebrate special occasions. There’s also Ghana’s kente, a vibrant patterned fabric symbolizing identity and social status. And attiéké, an Ivorian cassava-based delicacy renowned for its ancestral craftsmanship.

In Mauritania, the epic of Samba Gueladio continues to pass on values of courage and perseverance through the songs and stories of griots. In Nigeria, the Kano Durbar, an equestrian festival, celebrates community unity, while in Cameroon, the Ngondo honors water spirits and reinforces the solidarity of the Sawa people.

These cherished and vibrant traditions reflect the diversity and cultural wealth of the African continent. Their recognition by UNESCO is a powerful statement.
