Did You Know? Tuareg Nomads Made a Kind of “Powdered Milk” in the Desert

Long before refrigerators existed, Tuareg communities had a clever way to keep milk fresh for a very long time.

In the Sahara Desert, Tuareg nomads often travelled great distances with their herds. But how could they preserve milk in such a hot environment?

They developed a remarkable solution. Milk from goats, cows or camels was transformed into a very dry product called Tikomart or Takammart. After being dried in the sun, it became hard and could be stored for months.

Before eating it, people crushed it into a fine powder and mixed it with water, milk or millet porridge. Easy to carry and highly nutritious, it was an important food during long journeys and dry seasons.

Modern powdered milk was invented much later, but the Tuaregs had already created an ingenious way to preserve milk using the power of the Sahara sun. It is another example of African knowledge and innovation adapted to local conditions.
