History… Tells! The Day Guinea Chose Freedom
In this new episode of History… Tells!, we discover how Guinea made history by becoming the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.

In 1958, the people of Guinea took part in an important vote. They had to choose between remaining in a community proposed by France or becoming a fully independent country. The Guinean people said “no” and chose freedom. On October 2, 1958, Guinea officially proclaimed its independence. It thus became the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to free itself from French colonial rule.
This historic moment marked a major turning point for the entire African continent. It inspired other countries, which in turn sought and achieved independence in the years that followed.
