Africa’s Amazing Discoveries – Episode 4: Mathematics
What if the story of mathematics began much earlier than you imagined—and part of that story happened in Africa? In this new episode of Africa's Amazing Discoveries, explore how early African societies helped shape the history of numbers and counting.

We use mathematics every day to count, measure and build. Archaeological discoveries show that people in Africa were already using counting systems thousands of years ago. One of the best-known discoveries is the Ishango Bone, found near Lake Edward, on the border of present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Around 20,000 years old, it has carved notches that many researchers believe were used for counting.
In Ancient Egypt, mathematics was also essential for building monuments, measuring farmland after the Nile floods and organizing daily life.
