Lake Natron is located in northern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Its red and orange colours appear when certain microalgae and other microorganisms thrive in its very salty and highly alkaline waters. The pigments they produce give the lake its spectacular appearance.
Lake Natron is also one of the world’s most important breeding sites for lesser flamingos. Millions of these birds nest there because the lake’s harsh conditions help protect their eggs from many predators.
