Capoeira is much more than a dance or a sport: it is an art that combines movement, music, rhythm and history. In this new episode of Africa's Amazing Mysteries, ANAKids explores the African roots of this practice that has become famous around the world.
Capoeira was born in Brazil, but it was created by African people who were enslaved and who brought their cultures, traditions and knowledge with them. Through body movements, music and songs, capoeira helped preserve part of this cultural heritage.
Capoeira practitioners use acrobatic movements, defensive techniques and gestures inspired by martial arts. It is usually performed in a circle called a “roda”, accompanied by traditional instruments and songs.
Today, capoeira is recognised as a symbol of culture, creativity and resilience. It continues to bring people together around the world while telling a story connected to Africa and its diaspora.
