Amazing African Woman: Leymah Gbowee, the Woman Who Chose Peace

What if women could help stop a war without using weapons? This is the incredible story of Leymah Gbowee, a peace hero from Liberia.

Leymah Gbowee was born in Liberia. During the civil war, she first worked with children affected by the conflict. Then, in 2002, she decided to take action in a different way. She brought Christian and Muslim women together in a movement called Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace.

Together, they organised peaceful actions and called for an end to the war. Their message was simple: they wanted peace for their country. Their mobilisation helped put pressure on the leaders, and a peace agreement was signed in 2003.

Leymah did not stop there. She also fought for women to have a bigger role in peace and public life. In 2011, she received the Nobel Peace Prize, together with Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Tawakkol Karman.

Her superpower? Turning courage, unity and women’s voices into a real force for peace. A great lesson: sometimes, speaking up and standing together can change history!
