Amazing African Woman: Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the Woman Who Made Her Voice Heard
She did not have a cape… but she had courage, big ideas and incredible energy! Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti fought for women's rights in Nigeria.
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti was born in 1900 in Abeokuta, Nigeria. She became a teacher and soon began working for education and women’s rights.
In the 1940s, she founded the Abeokuta Women’s Union. Together with other women, she protested against taxes they believed were unfair and called for better representation for women in political life. Their movement brought together thousands of women.
Funmilayo also joined the movement for Nigeria’s independence and defended women’s right to take part in political life.
Her superpower? Standing together with others and never being afraid to make her voice heard!
