He was a soldier, a president and a man with big ideas. Thomas Sankara wanted to build a more independent and fairer Burkina Faso!
Thomas Sankara was born in 1949 in what was then Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso. In 1983, he became the country’s leader. One year later, he changed the country’s name: Upper Volta became Burkina Faso, meaning “the land of upright people”.
Sankara wanted to transform his country. He defended independence, Pan-Africanism and a fairer society. He also launched a policy aimed at transforming society.
But his story was short. On October 15, 1987, Thomas Sankara was assassinated during a coup.
Today, his name is still known across Africa.
His superpower? Daring to dream of a country that could move forward on its own!
