Heroes Who Changed Africa: Patrice Lumumba, the Voice of a Free Congo!

He dreamed of an independent, united and free Congo. Patrice Lumumba spoke for his people… and his message still echoes today!

Patrice Lumumba was born in 1925 in the Belgian Congo. In 1958, he founded the Congolese National Movement and campaigned for Congo’s independence and unity.

On June 30, 1960, Congo became independent from Belgium. Lumumba became the first Prime Minister of independent Congo. That day, he delivered a historic speech about the freedom and dignity of the Congolese people.

But the country quickly faced a serious crisis. In September 1960, Lumumba was removed from power. On January 17, 1961, he was assassinated.

Today, Patrice Lumumba remains a major figure in African history and Pan-Africanism.

His superpower? Daring to speak loudly for the freedom of his people!
