History… Tell Me! Bandung 1955, When Africa Said No
In 1955, African and Asian countries came together to talk about something very important: their future should belong to them!
From April 18 to 24, 1955, 29 countries met in Bandung, Indonesia. Several African countries were among them. At that time, many African peoples were still living under colonial rule.
In Bandung, the participating countries talked about peace, cooperation and, above all, decolonisation. They wanted peoples to be able to decide their own future. Africa and Asia raised a new voice: they refused to stay silent in the face of colonialism.
Even though many African countries were not yet independent, their representatives also spoke for peoples who were still under colonial rule.
Bandung became an important moment in history. For the first time, African and Asian countries came together to defend their interests and their freedom.
A big “no” to colonialism… and a big “yes” to independence!
