History… Tell Me! Where Does the Name “Africa” Come From?
Why is our continent called Africa? The answer is more mysterious than you might think…

The word “Africa” is very old. But wait: historians do not all agree on its exact origin!
What we do know is that the Romans already used the name Africa in ancient times to describe part of North Africa, around what is now Tunisia. At that time, the name referred to a much smaller territory than the continent we know today.
Over time, the word Africa was used to describe a larger and larger region, until it came to refer to the whole continent.
But where exactly did the word come from? Several theories exist. Some researchers connect it to the name Afri, used in ancient times for populations in North Africa. Other explanations have also been suggested.
The only real answer? The exact origin of the name “Africa” is still debated by specialists!
