Recycled Bricks Help Rebuild Schools Faster

After an earthquake, rebuilding a school can take months. In Indonesia, an original idea helped rebuild a school in just six days, using bricks made from recycled materials.

These bricks, called Eco-Blocks, are made partly from plastic waste and pieces of wood. They are lighter than traditional building materials and can be put together easily, a bit like building blocks.

In 2021, the organisation Classroom of Hope used them to rebuild a school on the island of Lombok after several earthquakes. The building was completed in just six days.

The idea helps solve two problems at the same time: rebuilding a school quickly for children and giving some waste a second life.

But this story is not from 2026. The project was carried out in 2021, so it is an example of a solution that has already been tested.

A plastic bottle or a piece of wood that we throw away can sometimes have a second life. And perhaps, in the future, more and more buildings will be made using recycled materials!
