Rwanda: Gorillas Will Have More Space

In Rwanda, a project plans to expand Volcanoes National Park, where mountain gorillas live. The goal is to give them more space and prevent them from getting too close to homes and fields.

Volcanoes National Park is famous for its mountain gorillas. But the animals sometimes leave the protected area to look for food. They can then get close to the homes or crops of people living near the park.

To help prevent these problems, a project supported by the African Wildlife Foundation plans to expand the park by 23%. This will give the gorillas more space to live.

But the project is not only about animals. It also plans to help people living around the park. Around 3,400 new homes are expected to be built, along with schools, health centers and community spaces.

The goal is to reduce conflicts between people and wild animals by 80%.

Why build homes and schools to help protect gorillas? Because people and animals sometimes live very close to each other. By improving people’s living conditions, it is also possible to better protect nature and animals.
