Did You Know? Africa Is Moving!
Africa may look completely still, but beneath our feet, it is moving! The African Plate moves a few centimetres every year. It is a tiny movement, but over millions of years, it can completely change the continents.
Earth is not a motionless planet. Its surface is made up of large plates that move very slowly. Africa sits on the African Plate, which also moves a few centimetres each year.
You cannot see this movement with your eyes because it is far too slow! But over millions of years, these tiny movements can transform the continents completely.
So, the next time you walk across Africa, remember: even if you cannot see it, the ground beneath your feet is moving!
