The Kingdom of Benin: Kings, Treasures and 800 Years of History

On October 3, Benin City, Nigeria, begins celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Oba Ewuare II, the 40th ruler of the Kingdom of Benin. But do you know the story of this kingdom, which is more than 800 years old?

Located in what is now southern Nigeria, the Kingdom of Benin was known for its organization, trade and, above all, its artists. They created magnificent plaques and sculptures in bronze, brass and ivory to tell the story of the kingdom.

In 1897, the British attacked Benin City and took many artworks away. More than a century later, some are returning to Africa. In 2025, the Netherlands returned 119 objects to Nigeria.

Today, these artworks still tell the story of the Edo people. An ancient story… that continues to live in the present.
