What a surprise! A man in the village of Behbeit el-Hagar, Egypt, was digging on his land when he came across an ancient stone covered with carvings. Curious, he called the experts. And what a good idea that was!
Archaeologists came to investigate. They discovered the giant head of a statue of Ramses II, a famous pharaoh who lived more than 3,000 years ago!
Can you imagine? The head alone is 1.60 metres tall! Experts believe the complete statue may have been about 8.5 metres high. That’s almost as tall as a three-storey building!
And there’s more! A second statue was also discovered. It might be another statue of Ramses II, but experts are still checking.
Archaeologists are continuing their work to uncover more secrets hidden beneath the Egyptian ground.
Did you know? Ramses II was pharaoh for more than 60 years! He is also famous for the magnificent temples of Abu Simbel.
