Africa Day: a story of unity and friendship between African countries

Every year on May 25, African countries celebrate Africa Day. This date marks an important moment in history: in 1963, several African leaders gathered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to create the Organization of African Unity, which has since become the African Union. On this occasion, ANAKids is launching a special series this week: every day, a new episode to help children understand and explore the heart of Africa—its history, its major challenges, and its future.

Every year on May 25, African countries celebrate Africa Day. This date marks an important moment in history: in 1963, several African leaders gathered in Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, to create the Organization of African Unity, which has since become the African Union.

But Africa Day is not only about the past. In many schools, children learn about African flags, sing songs, dance, take part in quizzes, and explore the continent’s rich cultures. It is also a moment to talk about Africa’s key challenges: protecting the environment, building peace, improving education, and imagining the cities of tomorrow.

Africa Day reminds us above all that today’s children will also play a key role in building the continent’s future.
