History… Tell Us : Thomas Sankara, the President Who Dreamed of a Fairer Africa
In this new episode of our special Africa Day series, discover the story of Thomas Sankara, a young African president who wanted to improve people’s lives and build a more independent and fair country.

In the 1980s, Thomas Sankara became president of Burkina Faso, a country in West Africa. Still very young, he wanted to transform his country and encourage Africans to believe in their own strengths. He promoted education, healthcare, women’s rights and the fight against poverty.
During his presidency, campaigns were launched to vaccinate children, plant trees and support local agriculture. Thomas Sankara also wanted African countries to rely less on foreign powers and value products made in Africa.
But not everyone agreed with his ideas. In 1987, he was killed during a coup. His death deeply affected many Africans. Today, many people still see him as a symbol of courage, freedom and hope for Africa.
