Africa’s Amazing Discoveries – Episode 2: The World’s First Constitution Born in Mali
What if one of the world's earliest constitutions was created in Africa? In this new episode of Africa's Amazing Discoveries, explore the remarkable story of the Manden Charter.

More than 800 years ago, after the Battle of Kirina, the great ruler Sundiata Keita gathered the leaders of the Manden, in present-day Mali. Together, they adopted the Manden Charter, also known as the Kouroukan Fouga Charter. It established important rules for living together, protecting people and organizing society.
Today, many historians regard it as one of the world’s earliest constitutions or declarations of human rights. In 2009, the oral tradition of the Manden Charter was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
