Miriam Tlali was a South African writer. In 1975, she became the first Black woman in South Africa to publish a novel. Her book was called Muriel at Metropolitan.
But writing was not always easy. During apartheid, Miriam Tlali wrote about South African society and the injustices she saw. Her writing was sometimes censored, and some of her books were banned.
She did not give up. Miriam also wrote short stories, plays and essays. She helped create Staffrider, a magazine that gave young writers a chance to make their voices heard.
Miriam Tlali opened a new door in South African literature. Her superpower? Brave words and a pen that could not be silenced!
