Why Is It So Hot in Africa?
Africa is often known for its sunshine and warm temperatures. But why is it so hot in many parts of the continent? In this episode, discover how Africa's position on Earth influences its climate.
A large part of Africa lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. In this area, the Sun’s rays strike the Earth’s surface more directly for much of the year. As a result, the ground warms up more, and temperatures are often high.
But not all of Africa is equally hot. The continent also has mountains, tropical forests, deserts and regions where it can be cool, especially at night or at higher altitudes. The climate therefore varies from one country to another and from one landscape to another.
Today, scientists also observe that climate change is making heatwaves more frequent and more intense across many parts of Africa. That is why protecting the environment is important for everyone’s future.
