Josephine grew up among the Samburu people in northern Kenya. When she was a child, she saw several girls in her community leave school to get married.
After her father died, her uncles wanted her to get married too. But her mother refused and fought for Josephine to stay in school.
Josephine went on to study nursing. But she never forgot the girls who had not been able to stay in school.
In 2008, she began rescuing girls at risk of forced marriage. In 2011, she founded the Samburu Girls Foundation, an organisation that protects girls and helps them return to school.
Her story shows that a girl can say no — and that one person can use her own experience to help many other children.
