Several centuries ago, in the Kingdom of Dahomey, in West Africa, lived the Agojie. This group of female warriors is sometimes nicknamed the “Dahomey Amazons.”
These women fighters were part of the kingdom’s army. They were trained in combat and took part in wars. Their unit reached its peak in the 19th century, during the reign of King Ghezo. At that time, it is believed to have numbered up to several thousand women.
The Agojie also fought in wars against French forces at the end of the 19th century. After the French conquest of Dahomey, their story came to an end.
Today, they remain a prominent figure in African military history.
