Amazing African Woman: Miriam Makeba, the Voice That Made the World Dance
She sang, she made people dance… and she was never afraid to speak her mind! Miriam Makeba became a true African icon.
Miriam Makeba was a South African singer born in Johannesburg in 1932. Her voice and music soon travelled far beyond South Africa. Her famous song Pata Pata made her known around the world.
But Miriam Makeba was more than an artist. During apartheid, she used her voice to speak out against injustice and defend human rights. Because of her activism, she lived in exile for many years.
Known as “Mama Africa”, she also helped introduce African music to international audiences. In 1966, she became the first African artist to win a Grammy Award.
Her superpower? Making hearts beat with her voice… and using her fame to stand up for what she believed in!
