Burkina Faso: High School Students Imagine the City of Tomorrow

In Ouagadougou, students took part in a project encouraging them to imagine a city that is more pleasant, more sustainable and better suited to the needs of its residents.

The “Cities in Question” project was organised by the French Research Institute for Development (IRD), in partnership with the Burkinabe Federation of UNESCO Associations and Clubs.

Between April and May 2026, sessions were held in six schools across Ouagadougou.

The students took part in an interactive and collaborative game designed to encourage them to think about their environment and how a city can meet the needs of its residents.

Each session brought together around twenty students, divided into two groups.

The aim was to give young people a voice in discussions about their city. After all, they are the ones who will live and work there tomorrow.

Projects like this help turn students into observers, but also into citizens who are able to put forward ideas.
