Coffee : a drink that stimulates history and bodies

From bustling New York streets to tranquil Ethiopian hills, coffee is an essential part of daily life for millions worldwide. Did you know this beverage has a history spanning over 15 centuries?

Coffee hails from Ethiopia, where energetic goats inspired its discovery by a shepherd long ago. Since then, people have enjoyed coffee to stay awake and focused.

This drink is intertwined with key moments in history, like the Enlightenment of the 17th and 18th centuries. Some say coffeehouses were « centers of critique, » where people discussed new ideas.

But it’s not all rosy. Coffee’s history also has dark chapters. Slaves were exploited to cultivate coffee in Haiti and Brazil.

Today, coffee remains hugely popular, but we must consume it in moderation. Too much coffee can make us jittery and cause headaches. So, the next time you sip a cup of coffee, remember its rich history and its effects on your body!
