The opening ceremony took place at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium, with young athletes from around the world. More than 1,100 performers celebrated Senegalese and African culture through dance, music and spectacular performances.
Around 2,650 young athletes aged 14 to 17, representing 204 National Olympic Committees and the Refugee Olympic Team, are taking part in the competitions. They will compete in 25 sports across venues in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly.
The Games run until 13 November. Beyond winning medals, they give young people a chance to meet, discover different cultures and share their love of sport.
For Senegal and the whole of Africa, this first Olympic event on the continent is a historic moment!
