Ethiopia: 805 million trees planted in just one day!
Imagine a day when millions of people across a whole country start planting trees. That is what happened in Ethiopia on August 3, 2026.
On that day, the country announced that 805.3 million tree seedlings had been planted in just one day! More than 26.2 million people took part in this huge planting effort.
Why plant so many trees? Because trees are very important. They help protect the soil, keep landscapes green and help countries deal with the effects of climate change.
The campaign is called Green Legacy. It started in 2019. Since then, Ethiopia says it has planted more than 50 billion seedlings!
In 2026, the country had prepared more than 8 billion seedlings for the rainy season, when young trees have a better chance of growing.
But planting a tree is only the beginning. It must be watered, protected and looked after as it grows. According to Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture, more than 80% of the seedlings have grown as part of the programme.
This big planting day shows how a small action can become something huge when millions of people work together. One tree today, a forest tomorrow!
