FLAM : a festival to discover Africa’s cultural treasures

From 30 January to 2 February, Marrakech becomes the capital of African books with the Marrakech African Book Festival (FLAM). The event, organised by the We Art Africa//ns association, brings together writers, artists and intellectuals to celebrate everything that makes African culture so special and unique.

FLAM is much more than just a festival: it’s a space where everyone can learn more about Africa. And why is that? Because the continent is often divided by language and distance. As the Mozambican writer Mia Couto puts it, ‘our continent is sometimes a mystery to itself’. So the festival seeks to build bridges by showcasing African talent and opening up dialogue.

Exceptional guests

This year’s festival has a rich and exciting programme! Prominent figures such as Christiane Taubira and Najat Vallaud-Belkacem will be on hand to talk about women in African literature. And to celebrate the 100th birthday of Frantz Fanon, an author known for his ideas on freedom and justice, several activities will pay tribute to him.

FLAM will also be welcoming a great writer: Ananda Devi, from Mauritius. She will be giving an inaugural lecture to inspire everyone. In addition, writing workshops and masterclasses will be offered to young people to inspire them to read, write and perhaps become the writers of tomorrow!

More than books

FLAM is not just about literature. The festival also celebrates other art forms, such as poetry and art exhibitions. For example, a Haitian artist living in Quebec will be showcasing her work, demonstrating that art knows no borders and unites cultures.

A festival for everyone

As Hanane Essaydi, one of the organisers, puts it, ‘art is a powerful language that creates sincere links between Africans and far beyond’.

With FLAM, Marrakech becomes a meeting place for discovering the incredible richness of Africa and its talents. This festival is a great opportunity to celebrate creativity and unity, while imagining together the future of the continent.
