Ahmed Sékou Touré was a Guinean trade unionist and politician. In 1958, France offered African territories the chance to join a new French Community. But Guinea chose to say no.

On October 2, 1958, Guinea became independent. Sékou Touré became the country’s first president.

He defended his country’s independence and Pan-Africanism, an idea that encouraged African peoples to work together. With Kwame Nkrumah, he notably helped create a union between Guinea and Ghana in 1959.

But Sékou Touré’s story is also complex. His government became a one-party regime and political repression increased.
