Impact of climate change on african elephants

@WWF

A team of researchers raises the alarm on climate change’s impact on African elephants, revealing a severe threat to older elephants.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) studied how climate change affects African elephants. Their research indicates that older elephants will face significantly reduced chances of survival, affecting the species’ overall ability to withstand climate change. The researchers constructed a model examining various environmental and demographic dynamics to gain a comprehensive view of the future of African elephants in the face of climate change. The results suggest that older elephants will be massively affected. Coordinated management of the Grand Virunga Landscape (GVL) is crucial, combining anti-poaching efforts with community programs, education, and habitat management to ensure the survival of elephants and other species.
