Clean streets, properly collected rubbish and well-maintained neighbourhoods: in Ayos, Cameroon, efforts to improve the living environment have been rewarded. The town came first in the Nyong-et-Mfoumou division and the Centre Region for the second year in a row.
How did it achieve this? The local council organises clean-up days every Thursday. Bins have also been placed in neighbourhoods to encourage residents to manage their waste better. A programme called “Clean Villages and Neighbourhoods” supports these efforts.
But keeping a town clean is not just the council’s responsibility. Residents also have a role to play: putting rubbish in bins, avoiding littering and taking part in community clean-ups.
Why does this matter? Because rubbish left lying around can block drains, make public spaces dirty and pollute the environment.
