Justine and forced marriages : a tragedy that makes us think

The story of Justine, a 13-year-old girl who was a victim of forced marriage, reminds us that even though progress has been made in Africa, many children still suffer from this practice.

Justine, a 13-year-old girl living in a small village in Togo, was married off to a much older man. Victimized by physical and emotional abuse, she tried to take her own life, unable to bear the situation any longer. Despite all the efforts of doctors and authorities, Justine passed away on January 8, 2025, after being hospitalized on December 31, 2024. Her story is tragic, but it highlights an issue that still affects many children: forced marriage.

In Africa, many children, especially girls, are forced into marriage at a very young age, often against their will. These marriages prevent them from living their childhood, continuing their education, and achieving their dreams. Instead of growing up freely, these girls are often subjected to violence and abuse, as was the case for Justine.

Fortunately, associations and dedicated individuals are working to change this. They raise awareness, help the victims, and advocate for stricter laws to ban forced marriages. Thanks to their efforts, progress has been made in some African countries, but much still needs to be done.

Justine’s story reminds us that it is essential to keep fighting for children’s rights.
