The Sahara stretches across much of North Africa and covers an area of about 9 million square kilometres. Temperatures can become extremely hot during the day, while nights can sometimes be surprisingly cold.
Despite these harsh conditions, people do live in the desert, especially near oases, where water makes it possible to grow crops and raise animals. Others, such as the Tuareg, have travelled across the Sahara for centuries, adapting to this unique environment.
