The African elephant can stand up to 4 metres tall at the shoulder and weigh several tonnes. But its size is not its only superpower! Scientists have observed that elephants can recognise members of their family, remember routes to waterholes even after long periods, and find important places needed for survival.

They live in family groups led by an older female called the matriarch. Thanks to her experience and memory, she guides the herd across the savannah, especially during times of drought.
