A very special visitor has been seen near the coast of Menzel Temime, in the Nabeul region: a blue shark! Some people were scared when they saw the pictures, but nature lovers have good news: this fish is not dangerous to humans.
With its beautiful blue color, the blue shark spends most of its life in deep waters. It feeds mainly on small fish and squid. When it notices a lot of human activity, it quietly swims away.
Scientists say it may sometimes come closer to shore while following schools of fish, ocean currents or changes in water temperature. It usually returns to deeper waters afterwards.
Although it looks impressive, the blue shark needs protection. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as a “Near Threatened” species. In the Mediterranean, it can be accidentally caught by fishing activities.
Its visit reminds us of something important: the sea is home to many animals. To protect them, people should observe them with respect and alert the authorities if an animal seems to be in trouble.
