FGM is when part of a girl’s or woman’s genitals is cut or changed. It is often performed on girls while they are still children.
Some people support FGM because they consider it an important tradition. In some families, this practice is passed down from one generation to the next.
Other people are against FGM because they believe that a girl should not undergo this procedure without a medical reason. They also explain that it can be painful and cause health problems.
Since August, these questions have been widely discussed in Mali, particularly on social media. On August 22, people also gathered in Mali and France to call for an end to FGM.
